Code can be a  scary sight for people who see it for the first time. A seemingly random list of  just 1’s and 0’s can be intimidating to understand. Yet, people are the ones that make, read, and develop code for programs. With technology becoming more and more integrated into our daily lives, it is essential that the students of today learn this intricate language so that they can be the code writers of the future. Our schools are changing, and  entirely new classes that consist of purely technology are emerging and becoming required to graduate. Tech has become such a normal part of daily life that it’s now a part of the required education to be an adult.

High School Coding classes are on the rise nationally, with 57.5% of U.S. schools offering Computer Science classes to their students. This number has increased from 31% in just the last five years.  It’s no question that programming is becoming a staple like math in education. Computers, phones, and consoles are becoming the main way we deal with almost all of our daily lives. The way we even pay for things now is online or digital with card readers, Paypal, Cashapp, and online shopping catalogs. Students are required to understand technology at a ground level to make it in our modern world. Computer science is just the way to do this with its deep dives into what makes computers tick.

One survey of both parents and students found that 90%  of respondents believe high schools should be teaching the basics of computer science.  The skills Coding teaches not only help kids understand tech and how it works, but also encourages creativity, independence, and complex problem solving. Coding not only teaches them to make programs and work complicated technology, but also helps them face real life problems with an open mind.

Coding is a class that should be considered a staple across all high schools. Students and parents alike will benefit from it due to the amount of things it teaches. Society can benefit from a generation of tech savvy people who learned the foundations of technology in schools.  Implementing Coding classes in more schools can  help students survive and thrive in our heavily tech reliant world, and it should be spread to more schools so students have greater opportunities in life.
