Buffalo Island Central’s senior boy’s basketball team is in the middle of one of their most successful seasons in a long time, as the boys finished first in the District tournament after an unexpected buzzer-beater victory over defending State Champions East Poinsett County. As the team prepares to head to the Regional Tournament with big plans of securing a bid to the State Tournament, this can be a bittersweet time for hopeful seniors who are on the verge of playing their final game at any minute.
One such senior athlete, Point Guard Leonardo Contreras, has played a pivotal role in the success his team has seen, earning an All Conference award and putting up impressive numbers on his way to a winning season.
Contreras has been a starter for the Mustangs going all the way back to his 7th grade season. He is typically the leading scorer for the Mustangs basketball team, but he has also taken a leap in his playmaking abilities this season. Contreras is known for his calm demeanor and temperament on the court.
BIC basketball has brought many unforgettable moments to Contreras. One big example was the recent Blue and Gray game that kicked off the start of the 2026 season, where attendees of the event could see the elementary students treating Contreras like he was a celebrity. As impressionable young students flocked to Contreras asking him for autographs, it left an impact on the often relaxed senior athlete. “It feels nice to have kids look up to me. It’s an amazing opportunity to be their role model. It just felt really good running onto the court with all of them yelling and cheering for us,” said Contreras.
Another standout moment for Contreras was when the team won the NEA Tournament his sophomore year, beating Marked Tree on the Arkansas State Redwolf homecourt.
Beyond athletics, Contreras holds a lot of love for his teammates and coach, “The people who have always been in my corner are definitely my friend and teammate, Kell Gathright, and my coach, Taylor Lane. They both push me to be my best self everyday,” said Contreras. “My favorite piece of advice that I have gotten from coach is to keep my head up because the losses will grow me into a better basketball player and a better person.”
As his Senior basketball season inevitably winds up, and the days remaining in his last semester dwindle, Contreras knows that basketball will be one of his shining memories from high school. “Long bus rides home, practices where everyone did well, and all my game days I spent with the guys. That’s what I’ll miss when I graduate. I am excited to graduate, but I know I’ll miss all those things forever.”
