Michelle Carter, 18, is being charged with involuntary manslaughter for encouraging her boyfriend, Conrad Roy III, to commit suicide. She has yet to receive punishment for such an awful act.

The week before Roy’s suicide, Carter and Roy exchanged several texts with Carter persistently encouraging Roy’s suicide. She helped him overcome his doubts and fears, planned how he would commit suicide, and telling him to get back in his truck when he freaked out and began rethinking suicide.

She told him that she would be there for his parents and she will help them move on when Roy begins worrying about how his family would handle his death. In several of their texts Carter said, “I think your parents know you’re in a really bad place. I’m not saying they want you to do it but I honestly feel like they can accept it. They know there is nothing they can do.”  

Carter tells him he is strong enough for this and that he shouldn’t be afraid of death. She tells him  he’ll be her guardian angel and he is “finally going to be happy in heaven. No more pain. No more bad thoughts and worries. You’ll be free.” She advises him not to think about it and just do it without thoughts of failing because if he thinks about it he will fail.

Carter formed a plan on how Roy would kill himself, constantly asking if he had gotten the generator. When Roy had finally gotten his dad’s old generator, Carter told him to go to Sears to fix the generator. She even told him where to go.

She said “it’s now or never”, and told Roy that he would probably make up an excuse so he wouldn’t have to do it. Always asking if he was going to do it tonight.

One night Carter said, “I just want to make sure you’re being serious. Like I know you are, but I don’t know. You always say you’re gonna do it, but you never do. I just want to make sure tonight is the real thing.”  

On July 12, 2014, Roy committed suicide and at one point had gotten out of his car because he could feel the carbon monoxide working and had gotten scared. Carter then told him that it was okay and to get back in the truck over the phone. Later Carter told her friend she could have stopped it but instead told him to get back into the truck.

Michelle Carter has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in Roy’s death. Carter’s attorney, Joseph Cataldo’s, claimed she was “brainwashed” and was just acting on her first amendment of freedom of speech. Carter is expected to face trial and prosecution next month.
