Distracted dudes cause dress code drama

In the recent months, school dress code has become quite a controversial issue. A story from Kentucky about a girl Stephanie Hughes and approximately 20 other girls being sent home for “violating” their school’s dress code recently went viral on Twitter. Stephanie Hughes’s mother had to leave her job to pick up her daughter, and Stephanie’s education was interrupted because her collarbones were exposed.

Hughes’s mother suggested in a Facebook post that the reason the school was so strict with the way their female students dressed was because it could distract their male classmates.

I find this absolutely outrageous.

Education should be equal for everybody. The fact that the school officials were more concerned with how the female students were dressed than they were with whether or not they were getting an actual education is appalling.

Maybe instead of teaching our girls to cover themselves up, we should teach our boys that girls are not sexual objects.

Yes, I do think that schools should enforce some sort of dress code, but not a dress code that is fit for the 1800’s. What do they expect girls to wear, a turtleneck?

Also, it seems as if many schools are exactly fair with their dress code. Girls can’t show their collarbones, but boys can wear muscle shirts? That just doesn’t sit well with me. If the a boy is so distracted by the sight of a girl’s collarbone or shoulder then they’re clearly not mature enough to be in a high school class.

Maybe instead of teaching our girls to cover themselves up, we should teach our boys that girls are not sexual objects.
