On March 2, 2019 our Journalism Staff went to the 81st Annual Communication Day hosted by Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. The day consisted of several local schools competing in a multitude of events, including photojournalism, sports news, social media, and more.

The following students represented Buffalo Island Central in the competition: Chloe Pierce, Erica Hurst, Destanie Shubert, and Halle Navarro.  Pierce won third place in News Writing and Headline Writing, which was a strong showing considering it was her first year to compete. Hurst earned first place in Feature Writing and Newspaper Copy Reading, as well as an Honorable Mention in Sports Writing.  Shubert took home first place in the Photography category.

In addition to these individual awards, the Journalism Staff won two awards collectively. These included first place in the Online Newspaper category, as well as third runner-up in the Sweepstakes category.

It was a memorable time for everyone who went, according to the participants.  “I was super surprised that I actually won something. It was a really fun experience and I can’t wait until next year” said Pierce.
