Mustangs Motivated by Math

Sarah Ray

BIC Elementary held the annual Math-A-Thon during the week of March 25-29.  This was the school’s 14th year to participate in the event.  The Math-A-Thon is a yearly fundraiser for the the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital during which students all over the country partake in challenges and do math either online or in the classroom, all while collecting donations.

The students have three days of activities such as fun books, online math games, and an essay.  In addition to these activities, they also watch a video about the St. Jude’s Math-A-Thon that includes stories from kids who have been personally affected by cancer.

Elementary teacher Lisa Turner was just as excited to host the event this year as ever.

“It was a fun week.  I believe the kids learned that they are very blessed and they can make a difference or possibly even save a life by just doing math while raising money in the process.  We love St. Jude Hospital!” said Turner.

Students can win prizes based on how much money they raise.  There were 53 students who participated and they raised a cumulative $3556.  The top fundraisers were: Emery Green who raised $414; Sylas Pettit who raised $310;  Aidenn Hale who raised $250; Maria Contreras who raised $250; and Riley Parker who raised $230.

Congratulations to these students who raised so much money for a wonderful cause.  The Math-A-Thon is a beloved tradition that BIC hopes to continue long into the future.
