“I never had a problem, and the reason why is because I never left the country. I never flew enough to be shipped out. I served for three years and 10 months, and in my time, I found out how the Air Defense Command worked. I was at a radar site in the middle of the desert in Nevada, and we were continuously practicing our defenses. We had to find out just how strong our defense was, and that was very reassuring, especially in a time when an ordinary 19-year-old boy didn’t know what was going to happen at any given time, since the war in Vietnam kept escalating. It never ceased escalating until I got out of the military. Being in the military made me appreciate this nation, because in the time of Vietnam, you’re young and our troops sacrificed their lives to keep our freedom.”
