Joining a band with your friends and trying to figure out how to get out of the garage you practice in and into a big time gig is a right of passage for generations of teen musicians. BIC has had a sudden emergence of two bands recently formed who are trying to find their own unique style. I sat down with some members of these two bands, “Kings of Olympus” and “TBTF” to find out more about what we can expect from these groups moving forward. “Kings of Olympus” members include Cason Kifer, Leo Thompson, and Aiden Nance. “TBTF” members include Vylan Walls, Layne Helton, Silas White, and Matthew Roach.
Q: Who thought of the band?
A:Aiden Nance:”I think it was Me and Leo, Me and Cason were already in a band together, but we weren’t really happy in it, so we got to thinking about it and we were just going to start our own so I asked Cason and he said yes.”
A:Layne Helton:”It was supposed to be with Emery, and we were going to do “Everlong,” but instead of Everlong, Emery went on a cruise, so we had to get a replacement for vocals. We got Silas White, and we played “Seven Nation Army.”
Q:How long have you guys been in a bang together?
A: Leo Thompson: “We have been in a band together for about eight months since late September.”
A: Matthew Roach:”We formed a week before the talent show.”
Q:Did you have any experience with instruments and or singing before the talent show?
A: Cason Kifer:”For singing …yes. I have never been in choir and the only experience with singing is when I am in theater and church. As far as playing my instrument, I’ve been playing the longest within the band. I’ve been playing the drums for about six to seven months.”
A: Silas White:” Singing … Yes, I have sung in multiple musicals, I also sing in choir, and I went to the capitol to sing as well. I have experience with singing, but instruments are different.”
Q:How often do you guys rehearse
A: Aiden Nance:”Probably around 30 different times that we’ve gotten together, we try to get together at least once a week, just sometimes it doesn’t happen.”
A: Layne Helton:”We had one practice, we were supposed to have four but all of them got canceled , so we had a practice the day before the talent show, and we practiced for maybe around 45 minutes and it sounded terrible. We had nothing before the talent show.”
Q:Did you guys have any other inspiration from any other bands?
A: Leo Thomson:” The Beatles are mine and Carson’s Favorite, band but in general we are all fans of music from the ‘70s and ‘80s.”
A: Matthew Roach:”Your Front Door,” the original band that Vylan was in, that was our inspiration.”
Q:How did you feel performing in front of the whole school?
A: Cason Kifer:”Performing was not that bad. some of us were more nervous than some others. I was especially nervous because I know I can’t sing, but we were confident because we had enough practice;”
A: Vylan Walls:”I was chill. I don’t get stage fright.”
Q:How did you feel when you guys won?
Cason Kifer:”I’ll admit, I was kinda surprised, but my band mates were more confident than I was.It was especially surprising to me.”
